Right Nostril Breathing

1 min read

Right Nostril Breathing to generate heat and energy.

It’s mid-winter! Time to incorporate practices like Right Nostril Breathing that bring warming

vitality into the body.

In Right Nostril Breathing (RNB), Anuloma-Viloma Pranayama, we take the entire respiratory

cycle of inhalation, pause, exhalation, pause, through the right nostril only. RNB is connected

with the Pingala energy channel, represented by the sun and bringing heating masculine

energy, and is associated with higher arousal states.

Why not give RNB a go the next time you’re feeling cold or sluggish?

How to practice RNB

Practice RNB in the morning or early afternoon.

Practice sitting comfortably or lying down. Relax your body completely and close your eyes.

  • Gently press your left nostril closed. Take slow, even breaths through the right nostril only.

  • Notice the sound of the breath and the feeling of the air passing through your nostril.

  • Take 5 – 10 breaths then return to natural breathing.

  • Do 3 – 5 rounds of RNB.

Avoid practicing RNB in the evening/before bed.

5 rounds of this and I definitely feel more awake and alert. Great tip.
